Wheels of Change

31 01 2008

Found a pile of these old Tractor Wheels on the eastern plains of Colorado.  Amazing to think how far we have come with technology.

Funny to think that, like most people, I have only seen wheels like these in old black and white films.  This type of tractor wheel actually reminds me of the countless World War I films I’ve seen highlighting various German and French Artillery (Canon’s).  They all had a form of cross slats, which help with traction and traversing soft, muddy ground.

Maybe one day I will find out what types of tractors these wheels were used with.  Today’s tractors are huge behemoths, sporting eight or more wheels, four-wheel drive, air conditioning and satellite TVs!  Even though these bad boys sport the latest technology, I believe the old tractors really drove on the Wheels of Change.  They were born from a huge shift in inventions that took farming to a new level, no longer dependent on living things to pull blades through the earth.

Interesting to think about — and see — how far we’ve come.

Fields of Gold

25 01 2008

The sunsets on a field of abundant possibilities, a field in the winter that lies dormant but as spring nears will soon become a Field of Gold.

Taken in Cheyenne Wells, one of the many farming areas of Colorado’s eastern plains. This field is used for Corn which once was a great source of nutrition but is now being converted into a source of Fuel. I wonder what the farmers think of this. Are they excited at the notion to sell more or are they sad their crops are being used in this way?

I speak in terms of Family owned farms, not that of the Mega Corporate Farms who buy and operate huge tracts of land all over the United States. I have no doubt the MegaCorp’s revel at the thought their crops will be yielding greater profits, I just hope the Family farms will see the win fall as well.

As things change…

23 01 2008

…they stay the same.

2007 held many things for us both good and bad. We traveled a ton, locally and abroad; Bahamas, Canada, Mountains and Vegas. We ate and drank, we laughed and cried, we screamed and shouted.

While some friends slipped away, others became closer. Family was no different, some faded away and others grew more distant or removed themselves totally. A shame indeed.

Our health was good and finances stable, while others close to us could not say the same.

For all this we are somewhat sad but overall very grateful. All we can do is persevere, keep our spirits up and enjoy life.

When we can, we take a stab at Holding Back Time.

I’m back!

17 01 2008

Ok, so I wasn’t really gone but as I mentioned, I haven’t been able to process many images because my 2 year old Samsung 22″ LCD died :(   Yesterday I received a new Dell 24″ widescreen LCD…wow this thing is huge!
It is so nice to have a separate monitor  again, I almost forgot how much I appreciated the extra screen real estate.  Normally I would be watching/listening to cable tv (through my pc) on my external screen but since the old one died I’ve had to rely only on iTunes.  This ultimately turned out to be a good thing as I finally had a chance to catch up on many of my favorite podcasts.  I would have trimmed my podcast list much more had CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas not happened; tons more CES casts showed up in my podcast selections that I would normally have listened to.

Anyway, back to reality.

Ok, maybe not. :) We are headed to Las Vegas today to visit my Cousin and his Family.  Maybe I can get some more shots like Vegas Eve which was shot from their backyard.  I hope I can capture something like this; Vegas Eve has been one of my personal favorites since I took it.  Hmm wonder what the light is like in Vegas this time of year.

Normally I would say “it will be good to get away” but we’ve been out and “away” almost each weekend since Christmas when we were in Calgary.  Our schedule has been like this; Calgary for xmas -> Cheyenne Wells for a hunt -> Aspen for skiing and fun -> Las Vegas to visit my Cousin.  We thought next weekend was free, and now it is filling up fast.  I also want to return to Cheyenne Wells to shoot some of the abandoned farms  etc. I got a few shots of recently.  A tiring schedule, but as the saying goes “you can sleep when your dead”.

Cheers all!

New Photos coming soon

10 01 2008

You might wonder what I have been up to recently. Looking at this blog you might think not much, but in reality I have been doing a ton of stuff.

We were in Calgary for Christmas; a working vacation. Not only were we running around visiting my Wife Sheri’s Friends but we were trying to spend as much time with her Family as we could. We had fun but it was good to be home.

We got home on the 28th and turned around and had a New Years party for sixteen close Family and Friends of ours. What a blast! Some people even stayed up till 4:30 wow! I was dead tired by 2:30 so I slinked off to bed early. We had a Wine Tasting/Sleep Over….what a great idea. Luckily we had the room as ten people ended up staying the night. My lovely Wife even cooked everyone a healthy but fantastic breakfast.

Last weekend I went Pheasant Hunting with my Uncle and Friends. This weekend we are headed to Apsen Colorado for some hob knobbing with Celebs and some fantastic Skiing; they have had 2 feet of snow recently. Next weekend we are headed to Vegas to visit more Family…wow packed schedule.

All this to say I have been taking photos but I recently lost (it died) my 22″ LCD monitor which was integral in processing my best photos. You never know how much you miss a bigger monitor until you are forced to do the same tasks on a small laptop screen. Anyway I have a few artsy photos coming from Calgary and some great landscapes from last weekends hunting trip taken on the plains of Colorado.

More news later peeps!

Ciao,

Lee

In the White

3 01 2008

Welcome to the new year! While we were out for xmas it snowed every other day it seems. We returned to nothing more than frigid temps and 60 mph winds. The streets were plowed more than a week ago, but we still have 6 inches of snow on our cul de sac.

We are definitely “In the White”.

We threw a big bash for new years…16 people in total, 10 of which stayed the night (camp out style). My lovely Wife made a grand breakfast of a yummy egg/chili dish, scones and carrot cake muffins….mmmm. We had a great party and most people went home to sleep the rest of New Years Day….yeah baby!

Note to self: never buy so much beer when throwing a Wine Tasting party!

I also want to send tell my Wife I love her. We met New Years Eve 4 years ago and it has been a fun but wild ride!

Cheers,

Lee
